IIT Madras, an Institute of Eminence (IoE), is among the country's pre-eminent institutes in technology, education and research. It is part of the government's vision to empower educational centres to be world-class teaching and research institutions. The three primary pillars of the IoE initiative are students, faculty and infrastructure. IIT Madras offers studies across 16 disciplines, nurturing the careers of close to 10,000 students.
The ‘Institute of Eminence’ (IoE) Scheme was launched by the Government of India to empower Higher Educational Institutions and help them become world-class teaching and research institutions. IIT Madras, one of the pre-eminent learning and research institutions has been chosen as one such Institute of Eminence. Pursuant to our commitment of fostering world class research, IIT Madras has set up several research initiatives in diverse fields of contemporary relevance. To foster a strong cross-culture based collaboration and learning, it is important to facilitate over-all growth and development in key areas such as students, faculty, and infrastructure.
Research is the centerpiece of new initiatives launched at IIT Madras as an Institute of Eminence. More than 300 faculty members have formed multi-disciplinary teams and identified cutting-edge challenges in 21 clusters to explore over the next few years. All these efforts leverage prior strengths of the teams to address new problems hitherto not studied, with great potential for important breakthroughs in knowledge and applications. Some of these new initiatives will gain momentum rapidly and grow into global Centres of Excellence over the next five years.
You can browse through the new initiatives in each cluster and find out about the exciting problems they seek to address, the experts who are driving the effort, the international partners they are working with, and more. You can follow their work as they break new ground, and uncover ways to participate and collaborate, or benefit from their discoveries in some applications of interest to you. Make sure you follow the initiatives of interest and keep abreast of new developments.
