A modern lab and a well-stocked library assist the learners and teachers to carry out innovative research. IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 10,000 students and over 2,000 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. The campus offers a peaceful and modern lifestyle to the students, faculty, staff and their families. The Institute has excellent infrastructure available in individual departments and centres; and has several centrally located facilities for researchers. The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern. IIT Madras has also been carrying out several social impact programs to foster inclusive growth.
IIT Madras has 36 Centers of Excellence (COE) across diverse fields of study, providing leadership, research, support, and sector-specific skill trainings. COEs act as the resource centers for various lines of studies and collaborate with industry to understand emerging skill needs and train students accordingly. COEs facilitate research and training in advanced areas of technologies thereby addressing key issues of the country and also bridge the skill gap of the students.
